Man escapes handcuffs and flees hospital

Healthcare Security Weekly, December 3, 2007

A New Jersey man, who was handcuffed to his hospital bed, somehow slipped out of those cuffs and fled the Jersey City Medical Center in his hospital gown and boxer shorts, reported the Jersey Journal.

The 28-year-old man stole a shirt from a Halloween scarecrow during his unsuccessful escape attempt on November 27. Police captured him in a wooded area under the New Jersey Turnpike after he escaped from the medical center, the newspaper reported.

Police stopped the man driving his ex-girlfriend's car after the woman said he violated a restraining order. He was originally taken to the medical center by police to wash off pepper spray that they used to subdue his pit bull, which was also in the car. An officer guarding the man stepped a short distance away to speak to a nurse about his release and when he turned back, the man was gone, with the handcuffs still attached to the bed, the newspaper said.
