CMS directs state Medicare surveyors to delay Medicare applicant surveys
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, November 27, 2007
CMS issued a memorandum earlier this month that cited both an increase in the number of new providers applying to participate in Medicare, and the number of limited resources available to participants. In response to this, CMS is now directing state Medicare surveyors to give new applications the lowest possible priority, according to the memorandum.
CMS reports that since 2002, the number of Medicare-participating ASCs has increased by 38.4%.
Instead of waiting for state surveyors, CMS hopes that new applicants will instead pay private accreditation organizations like the Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO), or the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.
