Baby abandoned at Georgia hospital

Healthcare Security Weekly, November 26, 2007

A baby boy was abandoned November 10 at a DeKalb, GA hospital, reported WSB-TV in Atlanta.

The DeKalb Police Special Victims Unit is looking for a mother, believed to be very young, who abandoned the baby at DeKalb Medical Center. Police said they are concerned the mother may need medical attention following the birth.

The baby was discovered by another pregnant woman around 3 a.m. after she went to the medical center because of false labor. The woman said she heard a tiny voice and summoned a security officer. They found an infant, with a t-shirt and diaper, inside a leather book bag. Police said if the baby had not been found when he was, he might have died. A security camera shows a person leaving the baby on a table, where he was unattended for about two hours.
