PPV: Capture the POA up-front using concurrent coding

As you enter the first few months of present-on-admission (POA) implementation and queries pile up higher than your cubicle walls, keep the following mantra in mind: teamwork, teamwork, teamwork. As the saying goes, there is no "I" in teamwork, and neither is there in POA. Coders and physicians are equal players when it comes to this new data element, effective October 1 and mandatory as of January 1, 2008. Experts predict that the POA indicator will force coders to spend additional time interacting with physicians, as well as understanding disease processes-likely more than ever before.
