Hospital to install security system after infant kidnapping

Healthcare Security Weekly, November 19, 2007

A northern Ontario hospital will install an electronic infant-tagging system by Christmas as one of several security improvements following the abduction of a baby earlier this month, reported the Canadian Press.

Infants at the Sudbury Regional Hospital will soon wear electronic bracelets that trigger doors and stairwells to lock automatically if one of the monitors is tampered with. The hospital began looking at measures to boost security after a baby girl was abducted Nov. 1 from the maternity unit by a woman dressed in hospital scrubs.

The hospital will also post a security guard in the maternity ward and require a baby's "support person," such as the father, to wear an identifying arm band. The hospital plans to install magnetic locks in stairwells, upgrade its surveillance system, and conduct mock code yellows, which signal that a patient is missing, facility officials said at a news conference.
