Veterans Day weekend theft at VA hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, November 19, 2007
Thousands of Indiana veterans are at risk after a theft at an Indianapolis Veterans Administration hospital over the Veteran's Day weekend, according to news reports.
Someone stole three computers from the Roudebush VA Medical Center that contained the names, social security numbers, and dates of service of 12,000 veterans, reported Indianapolis news stations.
Two personal computers and a laptop were taken from locked offices at the center, according to VA officials. Patient information is protected by passwords, but the VA is contacting patients whose information may have been stolen. The Department of Veterans Affairs is offering one year of free credit monitoring for those affected, according to The Indy Channel.
