Tip of the week: Take steps to cut IC-related legal risks
Infection Control Monitor, November 16, 2007
Public awareness of MRSA and healthcare-associated infections (HAI) may make it more likely that your hospital will get sued when a patient gets an infection.
To help reduce your facility's liability risk, review the CDC MDRO guideline published in November 2006, says Emily Rhinehart, RN, MPH, CIC, CPHO, a vice president at AIG Consultants, Inc., a member company of American International Group, an insurance and financial services company in based New York City.
Read it carefully to ensure that you are in compliance. Also be certain that your policies and procedures are in line with recommended best practices, she says. These are evidence-based interventions that are widely promoted. Even though they are best practices and not requirements, if your organization is sued, you will likely be asked to explain why you have not adopted them, she says.
For more tips to cut liability risks, go to www.hcpro.com/content/78418.cfm. The cost is $10. Briefings on Infection Control subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
