Joint Commission: Hospital quality improving

Quality Improvement Monitor, November 16, 2007

Hospitals are making measurable improvements in the quality of care provided for patients with heart attacks, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical conditions, according to the Joint Commission's second annual report on healthcare quality and patient safety in the nation's hospitals.

However, the report, titled Improving America's Hospitals: The Joint Commission's Annual Report on Quality and Safety 2007, also shows wide variations in care from state to state, according to a press release on The Joint Commission Web site.

The study also found that performance among accredited hospitals improved, especially with smoking cessation counseling. Organizations also had a 90% or higher compliance rate with 10 of the 16 National Patient Safety Goal requirements on medication safety, caregiver communication, and preventing patient falls, the press release said.
