Tip: EHR readiness assessment is a team effort
EHR Connection, November 19, 2007
Go straight to the source-all of them-when you're gathering information in preparation for EHR implementation.
Always discuss system capabilities with your vendor. When planning EHR implementation, verify that your physical space can accommodate the technology. For example, a preimplementation walk-through can reveal physical barriers that might block radio transmission and prevent the wireless network from penetrating examination rooms. This type of preemptive strategy allows you and your vendor to seek solutions that will prevent problems before they occur.
Seek information from your staff through conversations and surveys; be willing to listen and allow them the opportunity to offer solutions. Supplement the information they provide with your own observations.
Document work flows and consider retaining the services of a consultant to provide an objective assessment.
A comprehensive assessment with wide-ranging input can highlight portions of an implementation plan that are incomplete or require adjustment.
This tip is brought to you by the November issue of Electronic Health Records Briefing.
