HIM and coding staff work hard, so why not recognize their efforts during Health Information Technology (HIT) week, November 4-10? The weeklong annual event seeks to heighten awareness of the HIM/coding field, build team spirit, and reward staff members for their dedication. AHIMA has sponsored HIT week since 1989. This year's theme is: "Accuracy you can count on, Information you can trust."
If you're looking for some creative ideas as to how to celebrate, consider the following:
- Hold an open house with cider and donuts, and invite other hospital staff members so they can get to know the coding and HIM staff members.
- Take your staff members out to lunch or give out small gifts, such as pins.
- Play "guess the doctor's handwriting" and give out prizes.
- Encourage staff members and physicians to bring in their baby pictures and then have them match the pictures to the correct person.
- Recognize physicians and other clinical staff members who serve as role models as they work with HIT staff.
