Premier Radiology in Kalamazoo, MI may have violated the HIPAA privacy rule when it incorrectly billed 150 patients for procedures that they never underwent, according to an October 26 article in the Kalamazoo Gazette.
A glitch in Premier's computer system caused the incorrect billing. Premier billed its patients for procedures that patients of Borgess Medical Center, also in Kalamazoo, had actually underwent, the Gazette article stated. The bills contained confidential information, such as names and medical information including treatment descriptions.
Premier notified its own patients, as well as those of Borgess, John Brack, practice manager for Premier Radiology, told the Gazette.
