Grants totaling $3.5 million will help Minnesota healthcare providers develop interoperable EHR systems, according to an October 22 press release from the Minnesota Department of Health.

Minnesota law requires that all healthcare providers in the state use EHR systems by January 1, 2015. The Interconnected Electronic Health Record Grant Program, part of Gov. Tim Pawlenty's e-Health Initiative, is the source of funding, according to the health department's Office of Rural Health and Primary Care.

State officials say the goal of the e-Health Initiative is to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare. They also say that the intent of the grant program is to help community clinics and collaboratives, rural hospitals, nursing homes, small town physician clinics, and other small providers, transition from paper records to EHRs.

"These interoperable electronic health records will allow healthcare providers to exchange patient health information and deliver optimal care at all points of the healthcare system," state health officials said in the press release that announced the grants.
