Despite CMS' repeated dissemination delays, which gave healthcare providers extra time to update their contact information, a recent study of NPI data by SK&A, a provider of healthcare information solutions and research, has shown that nearly one-fifth (19.7%) of physicians' business addresses in the database are incorrect, according to an October 1 press release.
Much of the incorrect contact information results from physicians who have moved, have retired or have passed away since CMS issued their NPI numbers, according to the study. The study also found that the average NPI number was issued just over 13 months ago, and that more than two-thirds (68%) of the numbers are over eight months old, according to the SK&A press release.
