Wyoming's Ivinson Memorial Hospital has fired one employee, suspended two, and reprimanded several others for violating the HIPAA privacy rule, according to the Associated Press. Ivinson Memorial recently reminded its staff members that viewing medical records, even their own, violates HIPAA. However, all of the employees who were reprimanded or fired viewed medical records other than their own, according to the Sept 28 article.

"You can't look at your own records or any family member records unless there is a clinical need to do so," Nick Braccino, interim chief executive of Ivinson Memorial, explains in the article. And Dan Baccari, hospital trustee, also adds that "there is an appropriate process for employees to inquire about their medical or financial information."
