The peripheral vascular system is one of the most complex areas of medicine to code and bill, according to Jim Collins, CPC, CHCC, ACS-CA, president of The Cardiology Coalition in Matthews, NC.
One reason for its difficulty is because coders must understand complex anatomy and the numerous procedures performed in interventional radiology (IR). Another reason is that IR procedures require three different sets of coding rules.
