QUESTION: I have a question regarding HCPCS code C1787 (Patient programmer, neurostimulator). Is this item considered implantable, and therefore should we bill it using revenue code 278?
ANSWER: We are accustomed to seeing this device billed with revenue code 278. CMS has instructed hospitals to query the manufacturers for HCPCS code advice, and often manufacturers supply revenue code advice as well. CMS stated that hospitals may rely upon manufacturers' information.
