Andrea Clark, RHIA, CCS, CPC-H, president of Healthcare Revenue Assurance Associates, Inc., in Plantation, FL, strongly feels that "hospitals should understand what is going on in the ASC world, because they need to understand what may happen to their service lines."
For example, "If you're a hospital in a market with a lot of ASCs, you definitely want to be aware of the additional 790 surgical procedures that [ASCs are] going to be able to do," says Jugna Shah, MPH, president of Nimitt Consulting in Washington, DC. Shah notes that the final rule expands the list of Medicare-approved procedures for ASCs, effective January 1, 2008, by adding 790 procedures, including device-intensive procedures, ancillary radiology services, and drugs and biologicals.
(The above tip appeared in the October 2007 issue of Briefings on APCs).
