Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty announced a state-wide health information exchange that would function as an 'electronic superhighway' beginning next year, according to an article in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune. The exchange is a mini-Internet to link hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and health plans across the state and should help the state with the rising cost of healthcare, protect patients from dangerous drug interactions, and reduce unnecessarily duplicated medical tests, according to the article.
Patient privacy concerns are an issue. However, patients will need to opt-in to be a part of the exchange. "Nothing will happen without patient permission," Pawlenty told the Star Tribune.
