CMS and the National Center for Health Statistics have released the ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting that will take effect October 1, 2007. These guidelines are a set of rules that have been developed to accompany and complement the official conventions and instructions provided within the ICD-9-CM itself. This set of guidelines also contains instructions related to the present-on-admission indicator. Encourage coders to review these guidelines and begin using them as of October 1. Visit http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/datawh/ftpserv/ftpicd9/icdguide07.pdf to download a copy of the guidelines.
