A: Section 911 of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 mandated that CMS replace the numerous fiscal intermediaries and carriers that currently administer the Medicare Part A and Part B (A/B) fee-for-service programs with Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs). MACs will process and pay both Part A and Part B claims submitted by most provider types for specified multistate geographic regions known as jurisdictions.
