A: The HIPAA privacy and security rules do not define a set frequency for retraining staff members. However, the security rule does require periodic security reminders. The rule does not define "periodic," but it is safe to assume that reminders should occur more than once per year. Facilities should retrain their staff members annually or whenever a major change occurs in business practices, the technical infrastructure, or in policies and procedures.
