For eternal optimists, the saying goes something like this: "the possibilities are endless." But for coders sifting through the more than 200,000 expected procedural codes that will be available under ICD-10-PCS, this saying takes on a slightly new meaning.
The endless code possibilities may seem overwhelming, but there are many benefits to an ever-expanding coding structure, including:
- The potential for a unique code for each procedure
- The potential for the incorporation of new procedures into the system, each having a unique code of its own
- The standardization of terminology so that a specific meaning is assigned to each term
- The implementation of a multi-axial system wherein each code character has the same meaning within the specific procedure section and across procedure sections to the extent possible
