Electronic medical records require increased privacy regulation

Healthcare experts announced July 18 that new rules are required to protect medical privacy as the U.S. moves towards greater IT use, reports The Washington Post. As electronic medical records is becoming more prominent, gaps in HIPAA regulations protecting the information is becoming more evident. There are thousands of databases storing electronic health records that are not covered by current regulations, meaning patients aren't able to keep their PHI private, according Dr. Deborah Peel, a psychiatrist and founder of the Patient Privacy Rights Foundation in Austin, TX, says The Washington Post. Whether it is the federal governments or individual states that should lead the way in establishing privacy regulations is currently up for debate.
