Park Nicollet, a MN-based health care clinic, suspended over 100 employees last week for violating HIPAA privacy regulations. Park Nicollet Clinic has notified its 8,300 employees of the suspensions as a reminder of their "zero tolerance" policy on confidentiality infringements, reports the Minneapolis-St. Paul based Star Tribune. Most of the 100 employees were found guilty of violating HIPAA privacy laws; many viewed electronic medical records of family members, friends and other employees without authorization says the Star Tribune.

At a time when many healthcare providers are switching to electronic medical records, the Park Nicollet suspensions should serve as a warning to healthcare staff that the increased use of technology also means the increased ability to track exactly who accesses medical records.
