HHS official talks about HIPAA information sharing

New York Times reporter Jane Gross interviewed Susan McAndrew, deputy director for health information privacy in the Office of Civil Rights at HHS, regarding HIPAA regulations concerning information sharing. In the discussion, McAndrew notes that HIPAA was designed to be "flexible and balanced so different kinds of health care providers could come up with their own good practices, run their business, yet keep information private to the extent that individuals would expect." The Times interview reinforces this idea, while covering topics such as required, permitted and incidental disclosures, enforcement, and continuing education efforts.
