CMS announced on June 20 a new pilot program for certain Medicare beneficiaries under which they can access and use personal health records (PHR). Beneficiaries whose health plans are held through HIP USA, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will test the pilot program during the next 18 months. Under the program, beneficiaries will have easier access to their own health information, have increased communication with their providers, and be better able to track and manage their own health. Through each provider's unique Internet-based program, Medicare beneficiaries will also be able to easily research their medical conditions and medications, as well as maintain greater control over who can access their PHR.
Those participating in the study will assess the usefulness and usability of their online PHRs. Their preferences and assessments will help to shape the features, content, and functionality of future PHR tools.
