The Director of Information Security Issues at the Government Accountability Office (GAO), Gregory C. Wilshusen, testified June 7 that although federal agencies have made progress with information security, there is work to be done.

"Despite persistent information security weaknesses, federal agencies have continued to report steady progress in implementing certain information security requirements," Wilshusen said. "However, [inspectors general] at several agencies sometimes disagreed with the agency-reported information and identified weaknesses in the processes used to implement these and other security program activities."

Wilshusen's remarks come after several high-profile information security breaches at government agencies. For example, a 2006 breach at the Department of Veterans Affairs affected more than 26 million.
