TRICARE (formerly known as the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services, or CHAMPUS) is on the verge of adopting a modified version of the outpatient prospective payment system (OPPS). Hospitals should alert outpatient coders and billers, as well as compliance and financial staff members, of this important change and make preparations to cope with the few but important differences from the traditional OPPS.
