The Georgia Department of Human Resources is spreading the word about a lapse in security that has jeopardized the information of approximately 140,000, according to the Associated Press.

The state improperly discarded some of the personal information of birth parents whose children were born in Georgia between April 1, 2006, and March 16, 2007. Those parents will receive a letter from the Public Health director explaining the security lapse and recommending they contact the three national credit bureaus.

The breach occurred when the state discarded the records but neglected to shred them, exposing parents' Social Security numbers, race, education, and some medical information. The vulnerable information does not include the parents' or children's names, or the children's dates of birth.
