HHS has resolved three-quarters of the more than 26,000 privacy complaints it has received since April 2003, according to a new Web site dedicated to privacy rule enforcement. Six thousand privacy complaints are still open investigations.

The new data show that HHS has required the following types of covered entities to take corrective action, in order of frequency:

  1. Private practices
  2. General hospitals
  3. Outpatient facilities
  4. Health plans (group health plans and health insurance issuers)
  5. Pharmacies

HHS launched the Web site on April 20 to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the privacy rule's compliance date. The site also provides enforcement case studies and a flowchart of the Office for Civil Rights' investigative process.
