You cannot use your employer identification number (EIN) instead of the national provider identifier (NPI) to identify yourself as a healthcare provider on standard transactions, according to the answer to a new frequently-asked question (FAQ) on the CMS Web site. Use your EIN only to identify your organization as a taxpayer.

Other new FAQs include the following:

  • For Medicare provider enrollment purposes, must group practices submit new CMS-855Rs for every member of the group practice to let Medicare know their NPIs?
  • Will health plans link the NPIs of group practices to the NPIs of the healthcare providers who are members of the group practices?
  • Must a corporation that owns pharmacies (that have NPIs) obtain an NPI in order to receive payments on behalf of the owned pharmacies?
