The Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Research Enhancement Award Programs will shut down until they acquire security certification, according to the Associated Press (AP).
VA Secretary Jim Nicholson issued the order in an internal memo that came on the heels of the latest VA data breach. A VA employee reported a backup hard drive missing on January 22, putting approximately 535,000 at risk of identity theft.
Nicholson's memo called the breach "tragic" and said that the department will begin conducting unannounced security inspections, the AP reports.
