130,000 patients may be at risk of identity theft after thieves stole a laptop computer from Leonardtown, MD-based St. Mary's Hospital in December 2006, according to the Baltimore Sun.
The computer contains names, Social Security numbers, and birth dates for patients going back as far as 1989. The hospital did not encrypt the data or store the computer in a secure area. St. Mary's will provide free credit monitoring services to patients affected by the theft.
The theft is the latest in a string of data breach announcements, including similar losses at the Department of Veterans Affairs and Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Hospital.
