More than 28,000 customers of Columbus, OH-based Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company are at risk of identity theft after thieves stole computer backup tapes from a vendor in Massachusetts, The Boston Globe reports.
A lockbox containing the tapes disappeared from Weymouth, MA-based Concentra Preferred Systems after an October 26, 2006, theft. Another theft on the same day targeted Concentra offices in Dayton, OH, and resulted in the loss of information for approximately 130,000 members of Aetna.
Nationwide delayed reporting the theft until it determined the risk of identity theft, which it said was low. The company will offer customers one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft insurance, according to The Globe.
