Ohio University Provost Kathy Krendl upheld the dismissal of two information technology administrators after an April security breach that compromised 173,000 files, the Associated Press (AP) reports.

Krendl stated in letters sent to the two men, Tom Reid and Todd Acheson, that they failed to properly protect the data even though they did not intend to put data at risk. The files contained patients' Social Security numbers, names, medical records, and home addresses.

Ohio University fired Reid and Acheson in July. In August, the two filed grievances with the university grievance committee. The committee recommended that the university rehire the two, citing their work to prevent security breaches, according to the AP.
