Information security policies should include a clear and distinct section devoted to requirements for a security awareness and training program, according to a new special report by the National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST).

Special Publication 800-100, Information Security Handbook: A Guide for Managers provides a broad overview of information security elements to assist managers in understanding how to establish an information security program.

In the guide, NIST emphasizes the need for the following items as part of this program plan:

  • Definition of security roles and responsibilities
  • Development of program strategy and a program plan
  • Implementation of the program plan
  • Maintenance of the security awareness and training program
