Privacy groups in the United Kingdom (UK) are criticizing the government's plan to upload the health records of millions of National Health Service (NHS) patients to a central database accessible by police and other government agencies, The Guardian reports. Patients do not have the right to opt out of the system.
NHS' move to upload is part of its initiative to computerize healthcare in the UK. Proponents of the database say that there are adequate privacy protections built into the system. Although the NHS plans to allow patients to seal parts of their records, the database does not currently have the technology to do so.
