Almost 67% of providers have applied for their national provider identifiers (NPIs), up from 39% in January, according to a new Pheonix Health Systems survey. The summer 2006 survey of 178 providers and 42 payers also found that 76% of payers have identified the necessary process and systems changes to properly reimburse providers after the May 23, 2007 compliance date for the NPI.
Survey respondents also noted the following drivers for HIPAA compliance:
- Peers/trading partners (including attorneys)
- Press stories
- Internal whistle blowers
