Providers using paper claims to bill Medicare must obtain an NPI and use it by the May 23, 2007, compliance date, according to new NPI training modules. The module is the fifth in an NPI training package offered by CMS and covers the NPI requirements specific to Medicare providers.

According to the module, those using CMS-1500 paper claims must use the current form and their PIN/UPIN until December 31. Starting January 2, 2007, providers can use the current form with their PIN/UPIN or a revised form that requires the NPI and accommodates a PIN/UPIN.

On April 2, 2007, providers must use the revised form with the NPI, and may also supply a PIN/UPIN. With the May 23, 2007, NPI compliance date, providers must use the revised form with the NPI only.
