Organizations should develop policies that clearly define requirements for security log management, including log generation, transmission, storage, analysis, and disposal, according to a report issued by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) on September 29.
SP 800-92, Guide to Computer Security Log Management provides guidance on creating and maintaining proper security-log management. In particular, organizations should
- prioritize log management appropriately
- establish policies and procedures for log management
- create and maintain a secure log management infrastructure
- provide proper training for all staff with log management responsibilities
NIST also released several other security guides, including the following:
- SP 800-84, Guide to Test, Training, and Exercise Programs for IT Plans and Capabilities
- NISTIR 7316, Assessment of Access Control Systems
