NIST releases security guides

Organizations should develop policies that clearly define requirements for security log management, including log generation, transmission, storage, analysis, and disposal, according to a report issued by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) on September 29.

SP 800-92, Guide to Computer Security Log Management provides guidance on creating and maintaining proper security-log management. In particular, organizations should

  • prioritize log management appropriately
  • establish policies and procedures for log management
  • create and maintain a secure log management infrastructure
  • provide proper training for all staff with log management responsibilities
