Mark B. McClellan, MD, PhD, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), told the Associated Press September 5 that he will resign from the agency and leave in approximately 5 weeks.

"He'll be missed by the president and the entire administration," White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said. "The president has the highest regard for Mark McClellan and appreciates the work he's done for the administration."

McClellan served as President Bush's economic advisor and commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration before becoming administrator at CMS. He oversaw the beginning of the prescription drug benefit. As administrator, he also oversaw CMS' enforcement of all HIPAA regulations except privacy.
