Healthcare organizations do not have to be covered entities under HIPAA in order to apply for an NPI, according to a series of new NPI training modules developed and released by CMS.

The agency developed the modules to assist providers with self-education and to train staff. At completion, the training will consist of the following modules:

  • Module 1: General Information
  • Module 2: Electronic File Interchange
  • Module 3: Subparts
  • Module 4: Data Dissemination
  • Module 5: Medicare Implementation

Modules 1-3 are currently available. Each module consists of a PowerPoint® presentation and is designed to stand alone or be combined with other training for a particular audience.
