State governments' role in health information technology (HIT) adoption is the topic of a forthcoming study by the National Conference of State Legislatures, reports Government Health IT.

"The major barriers [to health IT adoption] are not technical, they're political," Kala Ladenheim, the project director, told Government Health IT. Approximately 15 states will contribute legislators and staffers to the project, with private sector input from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.

Possible project topics include the following:

  • Privacy
  • Telehealth services
  • State support for health information exchanges
  • Medicaid
  • Quality and patient safety
