All agency computers will be upgraded with data security encryption immediately, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced on August 14. The move comes in the wake of a second theft of a VA laptop, this time from the office of a VA subcontractor, Pennsylvania-based Unisys Corporation.
Under the terms of the vendor contract, VA laptops will be the first to receive the encryption programs, followed by desktop computers and portable media (e.g., flash drives, CD-ROMs). The encryption solution consists of GuardianEdge and Trust Digital products, according to a VA release.
The encryption program was scheduled to begin on August 18, and the agency expects all laptop computers to be encrypted within four weeks.
