As part of NPI implementation, CMS will require providers submitting claims for their primary facility and its subparts to include a taxonomy code beginning on January 2, 2007. The taxonomy code will allow crosswalking to the Online Survey Certification and Reporting (OSCAR) number, according to Transmittal 1024.

The NPI implementation deadline is May 23, 2007. In reviewing Medicare's business preparation for the NPI, the program identified the need to create a crosswalk from the legacy OSCAR identifiers to the NPI. A taxonomy code is necessary "because some institutional providers may not choose to apply for a unique national provider number for each of its subparts (e.g., psychiatric unit, rehabilitation unit, etc.)," according to the transmittal.
