A New Hampshire law that restricts access to physicians' prescription information is being challenged in a lawsuit by IMS Health, Inc. and Verispan, LLC, two Pennsylvania-based medical data companies, the Associated Press reports.

The new law restricts access to all prescriber information, except for ZIP code, location, and specialty. It aims to reduce the influence of pharmaceutical companies-who developed marketing strategies based on detailed physician prescription data-on doctors' prescribing decisions. Supporters contend that the rule also protects doctor-patient privacy rights.

The two medical data companies collect, analyze, and sell prescription information. An IMS Health release notes that the data it collects does not include individual patient records.
