Providers should include both Medicare and non-Medicare legacy identifiers on their NPI applications, CMS recently advised.
In addition, providers that report Medicaid numbers should identify the associated state. CMS asked providers that have already applied for NPIs to go back into the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) and update their information with their legacy identifiers, as the information is critical for payers in the development of crosswalks.
NPPES will be inactive for scheduled maintenance on August 2 and 3. It will return to operation after 8 a.m. (Eastern), August 4.
