The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will halt individual credit monitoring for data breach victims, citing the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) "high degree of confidence that the information recently recovered was not accessed or compromised." The VA offered credit monitoring after a thief stole the laptop containing information for more than 26 million veterans from an employee's home.
According to a VA release, the department will instead conduct a data breach analysis-a survey across multiple industries to detect patterns of misuse related to specific data loss. Although the FBI and law enforcement consider it unlikely that the thief accessed VA data, the department claims that a data breach analysis will provide additional assurances.
