Updates to the Payment Card Industry (PCI) data security standard might include a new focus on application-level threats, Computerworld reports. The year-old PCI requirements are aimed at organizations that handle credit card data but can also be a resource for the healthcare industry.

The standard's current controls defend mostly against network-level security threats through controls (e.g., data encryption, end-user access control, and activity monitoring). Revisions to come from credit card companies Visa and Mastercard might include protections against cross-site scripting flaws, error-handling problems, and validation errors, Philippe Courtot, CEO of Redwood Shores, CA-based security services firm Qualys Inc., told Computerworld.
