California's regional health information organization (CalRHIO) and the California Office of HIPAA Implementation (CalOHI) will jointly manage a study aimed at developing consumer-oriented privacy and security policies to govern future uses of health information technology.

The study, sponsored by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, will analyze organizational- and state-level security and privacy policy and determine whether it poses challenges to interoperability.

"Protecting the security of personal health information is important to Californians and so is knowing that their vital information is accessible at the point of care," Burt Cohen, director of CalOHI, said in a release. "California is pleased to help accomplish both goals in cooperation with this national effort."
